Sourav Ganguly, family join candle march to Protest RG Kar case

Amid the nationwide uproar over the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, along with his wife Dona Ganguly and daughter Sana Ganguly, participated in a candlelight protest on Wednesday evening in Kolkata. 

The protest, held in the Behala locality at "Diksha Manjari," a dance school run by Dona Ganguly, saw a gathering of concerned citizens, including the Ganguly family, who joined in solidarity despite the rains. Sourav, affectionately known as ‘Dada,’ attended the vigil wearing a grey t-shirt, while Dona and Sana, like many other protesters, donned black attire to mark the solemnity of the occasion.

As candles were lit, the protesters, including the Gangulys, sang Rabindranath Tagore’s “Aguner Poroshmoni,” a song symbolizing strength and resilience. Dona and Sana spoke to the media, expressing their outrage and sorrow over the incident, while Sourav chose to remain silent.

Sana Ganguly, while addressing the reporters, voiced the collective frustration of many, stating, "We want justice, this has to stop. Every day we hear about some rape case and we feel bad that this is happening even in 2024 and this has to stop." Dona Ganguly echoed her daughter’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for a safer society, saying, "We are protesting against rape. We need a safe society. Rape needs to stop."
